A Relaxed Posing Guide for Couples Who Don’t Love Being in Front of the Camera

One of the things I hear most often before a photoshoot is:

“We’re really awkward in front of the camera.”

And honestly, you don’t need to know how to pose.

My approach is less about putting you into perfect positions and more about creating space for natural moments to happen. I’ll give you gentle direction when you need it, but most of the time I’ll keep you moving, interacting and focusing on each other rather than the camera.

Here are a few simple things that help photos feel natural and relaxed.

Keep Moving

Movement almost always looks more natural than standing completely still.

I might ask you to walk together, hold hands, turn towards each other or simply move slowly through the space. These small movements create little in-between moments that often become some of my favourite photographs.

You don’t need to think about what your hands or feet are doing — I’ll guide you if anything needs adjusting.

Stay Close

You don’t need to constantly look at the camera.

Instead, look at each other, talk, laugh, lean into one another or simply enjoy being close. Those little interactions are what make photographs feel like you.

Sometimes the most beautiful images happen when you almost forget I’m there.

Don’t Force a Smile

You never need to smile on command.

A quiet moment, a small laugh, a glance or even a completely neutral expression can photograph beautifully.

I’d much rather capture something genuine than ask you to hold a smile that doesn’t feel natural.

Let Your Hands Do Something

One of the biggest reasons people feel awkward in photos is simply not knowing what to do with their hands.

The easiest solution is to connect with each other.

Hold hands. Put an arm around your partner. Touch their face. Adjust their jacket. Rest your hand on their shoulder or waist.

Simple, natural contact makes everything feel much easier.

Trust the Process

You don’t need to practise before your shoot and you definitely don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose.

That’s my job.

I’ll guide you when needed, give you little prompts and then step back when something natural is happening.

My goal is for your photographs to feel effortless, intimate and genuinely like the two of you.

If you love natural, documentary-style photographs but feel a little nervous about being in front of the camera, you’re exactly the kind of couple I love working with.

You don’t need to know how to pose — just show up as yourselves.
